Broome!

The second last 2002 AMA national has long since taken place, and many Atlantic Canadian riders were in attendance for the event. Our own vivacious Naj provides a race report with all the details and pics of course.
Broome-Tioga Sports Center, Binghamton NY Aug 23-24,2002
Being able to participate in the 24th Annual Suzuki East Coast Amateur Nationals was the highlight of their summer for some of our Atlantic Canadian riders. Over 800 riders signed up for 25 classes to race the two day program.
Heavy rains turned the event into a mud fest! Up front and center was Toys For Big Boys/Armour Transportation sponsored Charlie Smith who was there as part of the CMRC Super Mini Championship. Smith, up against some tough competition, finished 5th overall in the Super Mini! Well done Taz Man!! Other finishes for Charlie were 13th in the 125 Amateur and 7th in the 125 Schoolboy.
Younger brother Levi Smith also had some awesome motos. Levi, fast out of the gate and leading for a few laps, was just settling into third place when a crash put him out of commission in the first moto. But he came back to redeem himself in the second moto by finishing a strong 4th, giving him an 11th place finish overall in the 65 cc class.
Other Atlantic riders battling the mud were Pro Cycle sponsored Jaime and Robbie Swinkels. Robbie had a 21st place finish in the 125 Novice. This was one of the biggest classes there with 82 registered for that class alone! (see picture of the practice line up) Jaime ran in the WML Amateur on Saturday and finished up 7th amongst all the women riders.
By the time the WML Pros got to ride, the mud was even worse. Diablo Honda Heidi Cooke has a great start only to get tangled up at the first turn putting her second last. But perseverance and determination put the talented rider back up into third position. While trying to make the pass for second she went down. By this time it was raining heavy and the mud situation was getting worse, if indeed it could get any worse! Heidi finished up in 9th place. At that point it was decided due to track conditions that all other racing would be suspended for the day thus giving the Pro women only one moto.
The next day, Sunday, turned out to be a hot, sunny day for Round 11 of the AMA Chevy Truck US MX Championship. The crowd was huge and the racing incredible! Congratulations to Canadian Pro National Blackfoot Honda riders Jean Sebastian Roy and Blair Morgan for their strong finish in the 250 Pro Moto. JSR finished 6th and Morgan was 15th. Unfortunately an injury sustained earlier in the week left Two Wheel Motosports Mitchell Cooke unable to participate in the event. After doing a few laps in practice he had to withdraw due to the pain. All in all it was a successful weekend in that we all came home healthy and everyone had a great time!
