Supercross kicks off!!!
posted by Roddy
The Geneva Supercross hails the start of the 2003 Supercross season this weekend. All the top guys will be there: MC, DV, LaRocco, Reed, Ferry and more. Only Pastrana and defending AMA Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael will be passing on the 'world' event. More tidbits, too
Unlink previous years, this year sees a marriage of the AMA and FIM "world" supercross series' into one mega-series. If you want to read up more on this, go to the new official site of SX, sxgp.com.
Interestingly, anyone NOT competing in the first two European rounds are not eligible to win the "World" championship. In other words, if Carmichael passes on these opening rounds (and he is), but still earns enough points to claim the AMA and FIM titles, he won't be awarded the world championship, just the AMA one. A bit bizarre if you ask me, but the FIM is using every tactic they can to force the Americans to ride their rounds.
So, it is apparent that one of the other riders listed above will likely be crowned World SX champion at the end of the season. Will it be MC, DV, Reed or ??? I can't wait. Question is, will there be two #1's on the track next season? You know if MC wins a world title he'll be sporting a #1 on the pumpkin. BTW, all the supercross races are being broadcast on TV this year - set your VCR's now!
As you wait for the live internet broadcast to begin (click here to listen) take note that Canadian freestyler, and Fredericton AX competitor, Benoit Milot will be doing a backflip exhibition. Here's what he said on my favourite Euro site, MXLARGE:
"I have been working on the backflip for about a month," said Milot. "After the third time I tried it, I felt very comfortable. Doing the backflip at this huge event is great exposure for me."
A sad bit of news... Racer X is reporting the Blackfoot Team has folded their AMA Supercross campaign for this season. Travis Elliot, Damon Huffman and even JSR will apparently have to scramble for a new ride. I know JSR is competing this weekend at least, as he and Huffman were 9th and 10th fastest in Friday night's timed practice in Geneva.
Speaking of which, here's the list of fastest times in practice:
Practice 1 Lap Times (Friday) David Vuillemin, 42.6 Timmy Ferry, 43.0 Jeremy McGrath, 43.8 Mike LaRocco, 44.1 Keith Johnson, 44.1 Heath Voss, 44.6 Sebastien Tortelli, 44.6 Kyle Lewis, 44.8 Damon Huffman, 44.8 Jean Sebastien-Roy, 45.7 James Polvolny Jr., 46.3
Practice 2 Lap Times (Friday) David Vuillemin, 41.7 Mike LaRocco, 41.8 Tim Ferry, 42.8 Keith Johnson, 43.1 Jeremy McGrath, 43.1 Sebastien Tortelli, 43.5 Damon Huffman, 43.8 Jean Sebastien-Roy, 43.9 Heath Voss, 44.5 James Polvolny Jr., 44.6 Kyle Lewis, 44.7
Where's Reed?
MC is a full second+ off the pace on a very short course (time wise). Doesn't bode well for him, but it looks REAL good for LaRock, Ferry and Vuillemin, though I seriously doubt Ferry will be in contention. Would like to see MC step it up another notch, but I don't know if he's still capable. Let's wait and see!
