My scariest moment on a dirt bike
posted by Roddy

Of all the broken bones, cart-wheels and major get-offs, this one was my worst...

[Originally posted on the motonews.com bulletin board]

Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel, circa 1988

When Dan Fahie used to ride dirt bikes back home, he and I rode nearly every night together in the summer. We had a favorite riding area which was a sand and gravel excavation place. It was a big operation with multiple pits being worked, etc. We had tracks and obstacles stretched over maybe 1 or 2 square miles.

One day we were hill climbing around some crusher dust piles which were 70-80 feet high or so. These kinds of piles have just the right grade for hill climbing. Anyway, up he goes on the first one, and I watch him as he nears the top. Uncharacteristically he slows and comes to a stop, turning his bike to the side so that he can gracefully come back down. Weird I thought. He rides back down the hill and comes over to where I'm sitting on my bike and waiting. He doesn't stop, just circles around me and goes back at the hill again. Braaaaaap.... up the hill he goes a second time. And a second time he slows near the top as though he's trying to see something.

We've climbed this hill before. The top is just a plateau. You can just climb up this hill (2nd gear on a 250) and just keep her pinned till you get to the top. Typically we'd let off a little at the top and just grab a little air at the peak. Great fun. Well, "forget this wussy" I think to myself, and away I go up the hill... Braaaaap ... and Dan doesn't realize I'm already climbing the hill, he turns just as I'm passing by him, and is trying to say something, but hell, I'm already 7/8ths of the way up the hill... I ain't stoppin for nothing.

As I approached the peak, I finally understood what Dan was balking at. The front end loaders had removed the other side of this pile. It was a near vertical drop to the flat ground below. And me? I was already in the air, dropping like a brick.

You know those dreams you have when you jump your bike off some jump and then the ground just falls away from you and you're falling and falling?

Panicking, I tapped my rear brake. It brought my front end down and I just clipped the last 10 feet of the hill before it transitioned into flat ground. One monster swap at the bottom, and I brought my bike to a stop.

"I thought you were f&$*#in dead" is all Dan said when he came down.

That was the scariest 2 seconds of my life so far. Dan never forgets to remind me when we're together, and I never felt so stupid!

Roddy

hey
thats a pretty scary situation you were in i know the feeling.

last april i just bought a new cr125 and me and my friends were riding in a gravel pit.We all ways drive in this paticular spot and the place remained unchanged for like 2 years now but one day we all went back around nine and drove with no problems so we left and went to get some gas and food.
we all returned about 11-12 so i went up this one pile and came down the other side no problem went to go up the next one right at the top i noticed a loader siting right at the bottem of the pile all i could do was slam on the brakes and put the bike sideways.I landed into the scoop of the front end loader freaking right out it scared the hell out of me all i got was my side all scratched up and my new bike torqued up with equal scratches and the seat cover ripped and i did learn a very important leason now i always drive around in the pits to see what has might of changed a good idea well thats my story...

hey my scariest moment on a dirt bike(other than first driving one)is...
Me and my friends were goin to a larg gravel pit were they crush rock for pavement, all the dirt bike riders go there for a day of fun. well i was goin and i was ahead of my friends by about a few corners down the road,it was a sort of sandy road and traction was really poor,i had stoped at a corner for a sec to wait for my friends, and i took a leak as i did my friends rode by , so i had the bright idea of trying to catch them......i was goin on the road too fast for the type of traction,i rounded a corner too fast and got my rear tire in a rut and it made my bike swap to the left about a foot, then it jumped to the right and so one for about 5 seconds(or so it felt like)and i can remember the bike almost flat befor i hit the ground, fliped, rolled, then slid for about 50 to 60 feet on my back(scratching my new chest protector) when i got up my bike had the right side of my handle bars bent to the gas tank, the throttle tube warped and hand guard scratched to peices, and i had the worst road rash i ever had before.so after the adrenalin wore off the pain kicked in.

so i had to go to the pit to tell my buddys what had happened, and my good friend knowing i was ok started laughing when he seen my arm(the whole bottom side blood)

and i had to ride back out of the gravel pit and to my house with my arm almost with no feeling and bent handle bars(which is very hard to ride with)were i got cleaned up and began the most painful part... the healing process.....well that is my mst scariest moment (so far and hopefully ever) on a dirt bike...i hope u enjoy and i hope u be cautious when u go riding at high speeds on a unfamiliar road....

peace

scariest moment on a dirt bike...

before a race i decided to go for a little ride on my trail bike because my mx bike was already to go in a few days, for the nationals.it was a nice day, so of coarse i wore shorts and a tee shirt.

i was cruising along when i hit this rock. did a big swap and crashed when i got up, i looked at my bike my shoe was in the spokes, i couldnt put much wieght on my foot not to mention blood was coming through my sock. my knee was a mess of cuts and so was my arm. all i thought was no nationals for moi. when i rode home i got cleaned up. i wasnt hurt just a scare....
that was one of the scariest moments on a bike

thanks for reading

Recently (yesterday), I was taking a smooth cruise through the fresh powder (at approximately 8.6 km/h) and I hit a buried box and fell off my bike.

That was my worst experience ever.

It all started on a nice spring day when a buddy and i were out trail riding. We rode the whole day without incident except for the part where we had to pull my buddies DR 200 out of a waterhole that was ten feet deep and fifteen across. A little surprise considering he thought it was a puddle. Anyway, back to the story, We were on our way back to our homes and started racing a little bit back and forth. It was a rough, rocky and dusty road. I got caught in the dust and had to back off. I just let off the gas and a rock caught my front and i was thrown airborn (sans ma motocyclette)NO MOTORCYCLE! I got lucky and landed in a huge pile of rocks on the side of the road. Pain was intant and there was definitely something broke. Considering i was in fith gear wide open i am surprised i wasn't hurt more. I ended up in an old mazda truck loaded down with a load of wood and my bike safely stashed in the woods. I got to the hospital (in and out of consiousness) and had the joy of having a plastic tube shoved in through my side and into my lung. Five broken ribs, a punctured lung and lots of road rash was a high price to pay for a little fun. This was before my racing days, now i have just about ruined both knees with and without knee braces, broke a collarbone, broken toe, sprained fingers, chalie horses, road rash, and a few nicks and scratches. Ask me why i still do it and i will not be able to explain it. Any motocrosser can tell lots of stories about injuries but they all wouldn't give it up for the world and neither would I. Just thought i would share that with anyone who is bored with this white stuff and cannot wait to get back out there and ride and roost once again. Later poeple;

my scariest time on a dirtbike was when we were up at fox hollow riding and me and my friend from brown brothers cycle were practising the bus jump.i was by myself and was gonna try clearing it this time so i came over the whoops and put er into 3rd cruising down the straightaway towards the jump.I knew i was gonna do it this time so when i got to the tip one last shot of gas i thought would have done it.my 80 flew up vertical to the sky.i knew i was goin down so i pushed away from my bike looking down at the ground and seeing dirt pass as i was flying through the air. Then BANG! i hit the ground feet first and rolled a few times.my bike landed in the next corner and stood upside down.i limped over and picked it up.my bars were bent back touching the tank.i rode over to the pits and i was done for the day.i kept my boot on cause i knew something was wrong.when i got home i took it off and found my baby toe as big as my big toe almost.it was broken alright.anyways that was my scariest moment.

I have had my share of scary moments on a dirtbike, and it's had to say which is the scariest! BUt this is prolly close! summer of 2001 I was riding at Fox Hollow with my friends, and everything was cool. I know this track quit well, but for some odd reason I hit the triple down hill a gear high! I remember hitting the face spotting my landing and flying over top of it! I landed somewhere between the landing and the corner. I hit completley flat and rebounded into a superman!!! which wasn't a problem until I hit the berm. I did some sort of flip at this point and landed in the swamp!!! It took me a minute or 2 to get up, but i semed fine with nothing but a "sprained" wrist! Last fall I found out that sprain was a broken scaphoid and got it operated on and am still wearing the cast now! But I love the sport and will prolly break "Sprain" things for years to come!

My scariest moment was when i was riding 5 gear down a trail , i had her pinned, and then all of a sudden the trail got really bumpy and i got in to a huge speed wobble and , the bars were goin craazy and the front wheel was bouncing. i thought i was done for, but then all of a sudden i stopped bouncing and wobbling. it was weird like sumthing was messin' with me.

Your was pretty bad tho.

About five years ago, in the middle of summer I had my cousin come to visit from out west. One day we decided it would be fun to do some trail riding so I took my bike and he saddled up the four wheeler. The day went pretty good until we came to a field near my house, we tore around there for a bit and when that got old I decided to hit a jump I had built a few weeks earlier. I didn't see my cousin anywhere around so I decided to go for it. I remember hitting the jump in fourth, and as I launched into the air, there was my cousin parked with the wheeler right on my landing. The bike and I hit the front end of the wheeler and sent me into a front flip worthy of any judges top score. As I got up I saw that my cousin was all right and then there was my bike, laying on the ground and everything from the tripple clamp up broken off laying another 10 feet away.

my scariest moment on a dirtbike was last winter around this time . i decided to take my bike out on the snowmobile trails ,with a fresh pair of sand tires fully studded.it was a mild day outside so the trail was a bit slushy. i drove for about two hours then on the way home i was just cruisin along at around 60-70 in a strait section and i hit a jump on the trail that was about a foot tall(while going that fast). and after that the last thing i rember was being upsidedown in the air and seeing the bike cartwheeling beside me i rember trying to get the bike off of me,with the throttle stuck in the snow wide open, and the back tire spining on my back. that sucked! after the bike finaly stalled, i got up from under the bike and just layed down for a couple of mins. after i went to take a look to see what happend . and it looked like my front tire sunk threw . it looked as if i rode on my front tire for about 20 feet before i flipped. ya that really sucked!! now i have a good conversation piece:my jacket it looks like it was mulled by a chain saw. oh well

one day, i was in a sand pit, and found a natural 4 foot table top. i hit it 15 times perfectly. then, my dad said, okay, hit it once more, then we have to go. but he said, hit it faster. so i did, i was 5th gear pinned on my xr100, and i was thinking, this doesnt feel right. i hit the jump, and the front end dropped. i landed side saddle like all the best (not on porpose). i was in a wobble, and just as i had it straightened out, there was a log on the ground. i hit it, and the bike stopped moving. i flew thoug the air, and landed and rolled a few times. i thought i was dead, but i got up, and loaded her on the truck. i had sand throuhg my helmet, in my pants, and it was crazy
