news and stuff from the atlantic scene

Back again and welcome to year seven!

Well, it looks like we have everything running here again. In mid-December my service provider (who I rent server space from to run AMX) sent me a curt email saying the site was too "resource intensive" and my server status had to be upgraded.

To make a long story short, I did what they asked and now AMX is running it's own RAQ 4 server. In case you're wondering what the heck that is, here's the specs under the hood:

AMX has it's very own server... Woooo!

The Cobalt RaQ4 servers have all of the following:
.:. 500GB of transfer
.:. It comes with a 10GB internal hard drive
.:. Intergrated developer tools (ASP and PHP support)
.:. 128megs of RAM on initial install
.:. Unlimited email addresses
.:. Up to 300,000 page views per day

300,000 page views per day?! That sounds like a lot doesn't it? Well, turns out it isn't very much at all. In fact, we will require more than that which means extra fees for the "extra bandwidth".

Did you know AMX has around 6,000,000 page views PER MONTH? Crazy huh? People around here need to get a life! In August, during the Riverglade national, we had 8,2 million page views.

By the way, 8,2 million page views means just that ... in the run of that month people viewed over 8 million pages of data. So, for example, let's say you logged on to AMX, checked the front page for news, read one news item and then went to the bulletin board that would be:

1) First page view: www.atlanticmx.com (Home page)
2) Second page view: www.atlanticmx.com/archives/00000152.shtml (News story)
3) Third page view: www.atlanticmx.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi (Bulletin board)

So, that would count as three page views in all. If you clicked on some message inside the bulletin board, each page that came up would count as a "page view".

Still reading?

Ok, so you are pretty bored. Anyway, that's today's lesson in website bandwidth. Hope you found it educational. And hey, thanks for reading this far. And thanks for being an AMX reader!

Thanks Roddy for keeping the site going...

btw
Is this the same Cobalt RaQ4 that's listed as "end of life" on the Sun web site?
