Hi Erica.. Thanks for your post. Which idiot are you referring to - Carl Bastedo, owner of the Motopark track in Ontario, or me, the writer of the last entry?

In any event the international (F.I.M.) guidelines for "loudness" of a competition motocross bike is 98db. Most stock 125's or 250F's come in between 91db and 100db. The problem is many aftermarket pipes increase the loudness of the bikes dramatically. Small increases in db for example, produce large increases in the loudness factor. Here are some examples:

140db - Threshold of pain
130db - Jet plane at 50 feet
120db - Auto horn at 3 feet or Rock & Roll bar
110db - Chain Saw
100db - Heavy city traffic
90-100db - Motocross bikes
80db - Inside a car at 50 m.p.h. or inside a busy office
70db - Vacuum cleaner
60db - Normal speech

As you can see, considering the above list and the stock "loudness" of mx bikes, setting a limit of 96db is not exactly radical!
