I would try and find a yz125,2005 or newer if i were you.I've had a couple now and they were the best 125 that i've ever owned. As far as reliability goes,a 2-stroke is just as reliable if not more than a 4-stroke with proper maintanance. If it does blow you also don't have to take out a loan to get it fixed and the fun factor is higher with a
2-stroke.Not hard to tell i'm not a fan of the 4-stoke motocross bike, all i can see is that it has made the cost of racing go up,enough of my rant....now go buy a 2-stroke Smiley

Generally, I've found people tend to neglect maintenance on both two and four strokes because these days, the engineering is so good, they last for a long time even without due care and attention.
Without preventitive maintenance, it's difficult to tell when a four stroke needs things replacing, except for the obvious signs such as loud knocks and plooms of blue smoke from the exhaust.

So when something does "let go", it's because a component "fatigue cycle" has been exceeded, which often causes all sorts of internal damage to many of the other main components. ie Conrod snaps, drives the lower half through the crankcase just where it meets with the cylinder.

But with a two stroke, it's usually a case of the engine progressively loosing power until it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Upon inspection, it's not uncommon to find the main bearings absolutely shagged out, the big-end floating all over the place, and lots of head scratching as to why the piston never choked in the exhaust port because it's so worn. A new piston and replated cylinder does not constitute a rebuilt two stroke engine. There's more to it than that.

Which ever you decide upon, make sure you take somebody with you who has a lot of experience with bikes. Ask to see receipts for any work carried out recently. It's no use seeing a load of bills for an engine rebuild done last year. The thing could be due another rebuild by now! I keep track of oil changes/dates etc in a small note book for each bike. Makes things a whole lot simpler.

Good luck.

Hello all, I too am debating about a 2 stroke or 4 stroke.  I am not a guy with a lot of cash on hand, but wonder alot about fixing things.  I have a bit of understanding of engines, but the question is, when repairs come into play, would a 4 stroke be double the price in fixing ?  Do most of you guys/gals fix your own bikes ?  I am thinking back a few years, why did the 4 stroke become so popular ?  Power, torque ?  I remeber a few years back in the junior mx1, when a young fellow would smoke all the 4 strokes on a cr250, just curious is all..

Supposedly, environmetal. Two strokes were considered dirty because of their total loss lubrication method. With todays modern injection systems and advanced oils, we could see a turn around. Certainly the development of snowmobile engines and outboards prove two strokes can be very clean burning.
Initially, four strokes were at a disadvantage because they couldn't match the power to weight ratio of a two stroke. Hence 450 four strokes competing against 250 two strokes. They still can't, BUT...

The biggest thing in favour of the four stroke is it's power delivery. It has just one power stroke every two revolutions of the crank. So the tire has plenty of time to recover and find traction before another power pulse trys to break traction. This gives it a very friendly character when compared to the two stroke which has a power stroke every revolution of the crank. Ad in the fact that the two stroke is almost half the swept volume, the engine has to be in a much higher state of tune to make comparable power, which in turn gives it a less friendly character.

Personally, I don't like the sound of the modern four strokes. Where as the deep boom of a 580 CCM, or even a Husky 510TC sounded wonderful.

Good choice. The likelihood of me buying a used 250 4t would be zero-unless I "really" knew the bike-even then, likely not.

''4 strokes are 10 times more expensive to race''---Mitch Payton

You can rebuild a 2 stroke for $800,for a 4 stroke add a zero and divide by two.Four strokes were forced on the consumer by yamaha and the other japenese makers followed suit .
A 2 stroke makes more hp per cc than any 4 stroke can and you can make them faster with alot less money.
You can  buy a complete new 125 engine for less than a 4t rebuild........??????
I'm sure as you've seen the 2 strokes are holding there value and are making a comeback .
People are starting to realize that when racing for ''fun'' a 4-5 year old bike that needs 4 grand in repairs has just become a parts bike ... undecided..theres no fun there

Now this is just my opinion based on my own experience as well as people i know ,i'm sure others will tell you different .

I like the modern day fourstrokes, and twostrokes for that matter but....
A few years ago I had a go at a friends TT500 as a winter project.Once done and with the snow mostly melted I took it for it's maiden voyage and proceeded to dig furrows all over the lawn-much to the wifes delight.Anyway,it's completely different from modern day.It clawed and chewed and shook and roto-rooted and rumbled and growled and snorted. It was borderline orgasmic.Mmmmmmmm...Um...what were we talking about again? Smiley

skip the 125 and go straight to a 250 2t, they have lots of bottem end and they have alittle more predictable powerbands and are less rangy. In my opinion the 250 would be easier to ride but thats just me..
