atlanticmx.com  ::  interviews  ::  Charlie "Taz Man" Smith

So what's the scoop?  You doing some snowboarding?
Yeah.

How are you liking that?
Good.

How long have you been doing that?
Since 1997 or something like that.

You going to start racing and stuff?
Snowboarding?  Yeah, I do it whenever it comes here.

How often do they do that?
Oh, like in March.

Okay, so, how did last year go?
I got a 3rd and a 2nd (80cc and Supermini, respectively) in the Spring and then I broke my wrists then I got a 1st and 2nd (80cc and Supermini) in the Fall.

So what's next year? Do you race the 80cc 13-16?
Yeah, that and Supermini and in the Fall 125 Junior.

And the 80 in the Fall?
I don't know.

So how long have you been racing?
Four and a half years - since I was seven.

What did you start on?
Uh, first it was on a Z50 and I just played around on it and then a KX 60 and I go started on that.

So were you riding before that, or were did you just start racing the same year you started riding.
I started riding when I was, like, three or four, yeah something like that.

How about Levi (Charlie's brother) same thing?
He started riding when he was three.

Okay, so what's the plan after Junior?
Go Intermediate... then go Pro.

What's the long term goal?
Go Pro and have a top 20 in Canada.

What about locally here?
Win it!

You're comin' for me are ya?
Yep!  As soon as I get my 250.

I'll tell you what - I'll loan you my 250 this year so you can give it a rip.  Have you been on one before?
Yeah, I used to ride my Dad's 125 and my friend's 250.

Hey, what about Loretta Lynn's - you ever think about doing that?
Yeah, I want to do that.  When I get older.

Now what's the plan for this summer?  Are you going to do Walton and all that?
Yeah, we're going to Walton.

So who's the toughest person you have to race against?
I don't know... Mark Bird and probably Robbie (Swinkels) and Shane Elliot too.

So what's the deal with Mark anyways?  He never even rides!
I know, he's a natural.

Scary...
Yeah.

So, what was your best race ever?
Probably when Robbie (Swinkels) and I were battling it out at Hardrock last year.  It was awesome.

What do you think of that track?
Awesome.  I liked that big double-double section in the front.

You were doing that?
Yeah, we were doing them.

Okay, so what do you like doing best on the track?
Going fast!  And hitting jumps.

So what do you think makes you faster than all the other guys?
I don't know, maybe my endurance...

What do you think it's going to be like in Junior?
Crazy!  I don't know but I think it will be fun, different.

What's your favourite track on the circuit?
Lee's - Fox Hollow.  That's the best track ever.

What's your girfriend's name?
Chian.... she's not my girfriend....

Oh whatever... I saw you two...  kissy, kissy....  on the chairlift!
No way!

Alright, alright... So who's your sponsors this year?
No Fear casual wear, City Wide Delivery, Charles Smith Construction, Atlantic Rentals and Toys for Big Boys, PRO-TECH Suspension.

What's you goals for the Spring series?
I want to win the 80cc 13-16 class, qualify for Walton, get top 10 at Walton,

Okay, we gotta wrap it up, tell me your best race ever...
Um, I don't know...  I'd have to say it'd be the one in Kingston when Kyle and Mark Bird I were battling it out.  And me and Kyle and I just kept going by each other and then I got stung by a bee in a turn and I got up and finished second in that one, and the next moto was a good one too.

Thanks Charlie, say Hi to your Mom and Dad, and Levi too.  Good luck this year.
Okay, see ya!

CGIWrap Error: Script Execution Failed

CGIWrap encountered an error while attempting to execute this script:

Error Message: Permission denied
Error Number: 13
This message usually indicates there is a problem with the script itself. Often this indicates either that the #! line of the script is incorrect, or the script was uploaded in binary mode instead of ascii mode. Check to make sure that the script does not have control-M's at the end of every line. That will prevent it from executing. An easy fix that takes care of this most of the time is to put '#!/.../perl --' instead of '#!/.../perl' on the first line of the script. This is typically a problem if the script was edited or uploaded from a DOS/Windows/Macintosh station to a unix based server.

If you are not the owner of this script, please forward this error and the URL that caused it to the script owner. That is often the component in the URL right after /cgiwrap/.
