Robbie Swinkels

Robbie at Burtt's Corner, 2001

One of the biggest changes in Atlantic MX over the last 10 years or so is the huge number of young riders (and their families) showing up at the races.  The Swinkels are this way - both children, Robbie and Jaime race bikes and their super-supportive parents are always at the track.  If you've met them, you know them to be among the nicest people on the planet.

On August 2nd Robbie suffered a nasty crash while practicing and broke his femur along with his right arm and left thumb.  I caught up with him at the IWK Children's Hostpital in Halifax.

When did you start racing?
It was at Pleasant Valley in 1997.

How did you do?
I don't know, we never stayed around afterwards.

What was your first bike?
A 1977 Z-50.

How did you get into racing?
Through Clifford Thompson.  But I wouldn't have been as interested or gotten very good without Jeremy Wallace's help.

Who do you think is the "best rider", or, who do you model yourself after?
I'd say Travis Pastrana and Jimmy Button, too.

Pizza or Chinese?
Pizza.

Who's the toughest person you've had to race against?
Charlie Smith or that Colton guy from B.C.

What was your greatest moment in racing?
Winning the arenacross, no wait.... yeah, winning the Fredericton Arenacross (Friday night).

If you could be racing anywhere, for any team, who would it be?
Team Honda, USA, or a Freestyle team maybe.

What makes you better than your competition?
I can't say that because that's bragging!

125's or 250's?
125's.

Where are you from?
Belmont, Nova Scotia (near Truro).

What's your next big challenge?
(Sister Jaime shouts: Healing!) Yeah, healing my femur!

MC or RC?
MC.

Who sponsors you?
AXO, Pro Cycle, Barb's Berries, Auto Trans Garage.

How old are you?
12.

Who would you like to throw a big billowing roost over?
Roddy MacLeod (laughs)!

What are you best at on the track?
Definately not my turns - my jumps.

Favourite saying...
"I dig that like a hobo digs through trash!"

CGIWrap Error: Script Execution Failed
CGIWrap Error: Script Execution Failed

CGIWrap encountered an error while attempting to execute this script:

Error Message: Permission denied
Error Number: 13
This message usually indicates there is a problem with the script itself. Often this indicates either that the #! line of the script is incorrect, or the script was uploaded in binary mode instead of ascii mode. Check to make sure that the script does not have control-M's at the end of every line. That will prevent it from executing. An easy fix that takes care of this most of the time is to put '#!/.../perl --' instead of '#!/.../perl' on the first line of the script. This is typically a problem if the script was edited or uploaded from a DOS/Windows/Macintosh station to a unix based server.

If you are not the owner of this script, please forward this error and the URL that caused it to the script owner. That is often the component in the URL right after /cgiwrap/.
