Perfect
conditions greet riders for opening round of Fall
Atlantic Series
This weekend's racing
in Fredericton was superb. The track was groomed
beautifully and the weather was excellent. It was
hot and sunny on Saturday but the hard working Fire
crews did an excellent job of keeping the dust
down. Saturday saw a good rain shower during the
first set of motos, but it cleared for the afternoon
making the conditions some of the best we've seen.
Terry Bird and his crew did an excellent job of
preparing and organizing the event.
Some highlights from
the weekend...
R&B
Blair's/Two-Wheel/Pro Action/Kawasaki's Machine Gun Mitchell
Cooke ran away with all the Pro motos. Except
one. In the first 125 Pro moto on Sunday, local
hero Jammin' Jamie Bird holeshot Mitchell and the
two of them went head to head for the next five laps or
so. Mitchell, sensing Jamie bobbled on the back
straight, went for it on the inside of the next 180
degree left hander in front of the spectators.
Unfortunately the bike wasn't interested in Mitch's
version of physics and the two of them blew the berm AND
the fencing behind it! Luckily Mitch wasn't
injured badly, but the result was a DNF. Aside
from that incident, Mitch kept the crowd interested with
his completely flat whips on the finish line jump (lap
after lap, after lap, after lap....).
The Pro class also
welcomed back multi-time Atlantic Champion Johnny
Montes aboard a borrowed KX 125 of Boo Green's.
It's always good to see Johnny ride. Joe "the
Caveman" Doucette made an appearance and Lee
Steeves made a successful debut in the Pro class
with uncharacteristic good starts all weekend.
In the Intermediates,
rookie Ryan Silliker had a great opening 125cc
moto on Saturday and sure raised a few eyebrows with his
speed. He and Jean Pothier are worth
watching in the future once they get acclimated in their
new class.
But it really was Boo
Green's weekend aboard his KX 125's in the
Intermediate class. Boo's trip to Quebec and
Ontario, as well as riding all summer with Johnny
Montes, seems to have boosted the Nova Scotian's
confidence and riding level. He consistently beat
some Pro's this weekend and had very good starts.
This weekend also saw
the return of 80cc rider "Taz Man" Charlie
Smith who suffered two broken wrists at the end of
the Spring series. The wrists, although not fully
healed, were good enough for Charlie to win a few races
and stay in the hunt for the Fall championship.
By the way, Charlie's
best friend and fellow 80cc rider Robbie Swinkels
is now back home from the hospital and is hoping to get
to come to one of the races in the near future.
And, speaking of the Swinkels, sister Jaime had a
great weekend aboard her new CR 125. Also notable
in the women's class was Hurricane Heidi Cooke's
performances. She just gets faster and
faster! But now she's going to get richer and
richer....! Seems while competing in Walton, Heidi
was recruited to do some stunt-double jumping for a new
movie being filmed now in Montreal. In fact, Heidi
had to fly to the location before the weekend's racing
was through. This is an excellent gig for her and
we're all so proud!
Pro Quad racing was
also good this weekend with a few Quebec boys mixing it
up with our locals. Action Cycle's Kyle
Ledwidge was able to steal a few motos though and
keep them honest.
More info and possibly
photos will be posted when available. If you have
photos of the racing, you can email
them to Roddy.
Full results from the
weekend will be (eventually) posted on the CMRC website here.
