Riverglade
Motocross, May 26
What can you say about
this weather we've been getting? Warm, sunny skies
welcomed all the racers at the 2nd round of the Atlantic
Spring Championship series. Larry Northrup
and his crew from Toys for Big Boys groomed the track
perfectly for Riverglade's first race of the year.
Many of the jumps were re-shaped and improved over last
year. Overall riders were very pleased with
changes to the track.
But, all that sun did
result in some pretty dusty conditions in the afternoon,
despite the work of the Volunteers. It didn't stop
some great racing action though!
The 60cc class saw Levi
Smith take the first moto win while Davey Fraser
took the second moto, with Levi finishing second.
I'm pretty sure this gave Davey the win on the
day. In the 80cc 12-16 class it was once again all
Charlie Smith aboard his Charles Smith
Construction, Toys for Big Boys Honda CR 80. But
KX 80 rider Justin Kenney maybe had the hardest
ride of the day, coming from well back in the pack in
the second moto to claim second place.
In 125 Junior the Deveau
brothers, Andre and Gilles, had their
hands full in the second moto with a rider from Quebec,
I believe. I'm not sure if they claimed the lead
before the end of the race, but it sounded good on the
loudspeaker. You know the top Junior riders were
jumping the step up? Pretty impressive!
125 Intermediates once
again saw Valley Yamaha's Mean Boo Green up front
on his YZF 250 ahead of Pro Cycle, PRO-TECH sponsored
rider Adam Turner. In the 250 class Turner
was largely unchallenged and posted some great rides
throughout the day - only one of two Intermediates
jumping the 90' spectator jump. Caper Derek
Selfridge is the other nut jumping the massive span.
125 Pro action was
dominated by Toys for Big Boys' Flyin Ryan Lockhart.
Ryan took both moto wins on his CR 125 with J&M
Motorsport's Jamie Bird taking home second
place. In 250 action Lockhart again took the wins,
this time in front of Johnny Montes on his Honda
CR 250 while Bird took third overall. The second
250 moto came down the the last lap as the Hondas of
Lockhart and Montes traded the lead several times.
In the end Lockhart made a hair-raising last effort,
making the pass and taking home 50 points on the
day. The GP Pro/Am race was re-scheduled for the
first half of the day so Lockhart could catch a plane to
Ontario where he's competing in that series. He
would take the win with Montes, Bird and Pro Cycle, PRO-TECH's
Roddy MacLeod in tow.
Not sure how the +25
action ended, but I know Derek Scott took the first moto
win, but the second moto was won be either Lowell Sabine
or Derek Selfridge. Anyone want to straighten me
out there?
I also understand Pro
Cycle's Jaime Swinkels took the win in the Ladies
class, but I'm afraid I missed that action, as well as
the Quads, the 80cc 7-12 and 250/Open Junior.
That's what happens when you're racing I guess!

Fox Hollow Motocross
School
The following day,
Sunday, saw may of the riders from Riverglade make the
small trip into Salisbury to participate in Toys for Big
Boys sponsored Lee Steeve's motocross
school. A one-day event, Lee's school had some 45
participants of all ages - from 5 year old's to 55 year
old's! Johnny Montes, Myself, Don MacLeod and Lee
gave instruction on jumping, cornering, starting,
braking and even help for the many 50 and 60cc riders in
the region. Everyone seemed to have a great time
and of course the Fox Hollow is the perfect venue for a
school featuring a wide variety of obstacles and soil
types for riders to learn on.
